The ship's radio officer Joseph Ford Cain served proudly on board during that time. In later years, he shared his experience with his grandchildren about the horrors and the excitement he witnessed during the attacks of the kamikaze on the Laffey, that would later become known as "the ship that would not die" as she held her own against the attacks.
