B.B. Warfield (1851–1921), professor of theology at Princeton Seminary, is one of the most significant figures in the history of American Presbyterianism. He made contributions not only to theological scholarship but also to Presbyterian controversies surrounding the Reformed confession. Prior to the publication of this book, scholarly monographs on Warfield focused on historical theology; none, however, addressed Warfield from the perspective of church history. This book does so by looking at his engagement in the confessional controversies in the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (PCUSA), of which he was an ordained minister. Because the book’s main contribution to Warfield scholarship lies in church history rather than historical theology, it draws more heavily on his unpublished archival material than his published theological writings.
