The book begins with the Klan, in a cotton field not more than 50 yards away, amidst the darkness stood the ruins of a long row of shrouded weather beaten, whitewashed slave cabins, as they inducted new members and it ends with them taking over a small town about 30 miles in New Orleans. 1845-1869 "Summer's Harvest" allow readers to travel with a slave named, Jeremiah who was sold at the age of seven, as he makes a miraculous escape from slavery as two relentless slave catchers and their dogs pursue him. Jeremiah encounters an old Irish sea-captain who is tormented by his past tell him about his final daring high seas adventure of the slave trade. Jeremiah serves in the Union Army, after the civil war he set out on a journey in the Deep South in search of his parents. 1929-1939 Soon after taking office, Sheriff Percy visits the home of a dead Negro boy and speak to the grief-stricken mother. After more investigation, he then requested a meeting with the coroner to ask for an inquest. Parish President Howard Taylor is astonished when Sheriff Percy confronted him and suggested that Sheriff Stevenson had something to do with the boy's death. He warns Percy to stop his investigation of the late sheriff.
