Madison, WV comes to life one time a year. Smoots from all over the country return home to the quiet, sleepy town for their annual Smoot Family Reunion, and this year is the 100th celebration. Papaw has lived a solitary life in Madison for the past 20 years believing he is under a divine curse ever since the break-up of his family. Accepting his fate for his past transgressions, Papaw is granted a slight reprieve when he was selected to be this year guest speaker. He has a word for anyone who follows scriptures, and how the breakdown of a family not only adversely effects those individuals, but their whole community. The many publications that compares the downtrodden of the Bible to being people of ebony hue and how God somehow made a way. If he did it for them, he will do it for us. Papaw uses that same history comparison; however, he also focuses on that fact that the very same people who took Black history out of the Bible, are the very same authors of theology as we know it today. Also pointing out how the closer one gets to the truth, the Word itself is changed, to fulfill an agenda that is not of God.However, the ghost of his past rears its ugly head again, this time in the form a life-threating illness. With surgery pending, Papaw won't be able to give his speech to the family. Now he has to convince his son, Ayman, to give his speech, which won't be an easy task. Ayman, like most upper-class African Americans is very comfortable in the status que. Any challenges to this country's ideology or theology will not be well received, especially the latter. Papaw will have to recruit the help of his oldest daughter, Dayana, to use her persuasive power of being the eldest sibling. If all else fells, then he'll turn to the antagonist. Ayman's baby sister, Kaamil. In a cruel twist of fate, Papaw has even found love. Blessed to have one last moment with his family, he is at peace, and plans to make the most of however much time he has left.
