Reseña del libro "tinkering: the microevolution of development, no. 284"

this book explores theoretical and practical issues regarding small-scale evolutionary development known as tinkering. such microevolutionary events have been well studied on a population genetic level and from the perspective of adaptive phenotypic evolution, but their developmental mechanisms remain poorly studied. it features a wide range of perspectives and addresses several fundamental questions. how does tinkering occur developmentally and how is it manifested phenotypically? are the developmental mechanisms by which tinkering occurs different from those that underlie larger evolutionary changes? what are the developmental constraints on tinkering? and how do we test hypotheses about micro-evolutionary shifts in development from the fossil record? the major topics covered in the book are: the definition of tinkering and what it entails; how the evolutionary developmental bases of micro-evolutionary events differ from those of larger-scale macro-evolutionary events and whether small-scale and large-scale evolutionary novelties are created through similar or different mechanisms. the book also considers whether tinkering occurs on hierarchical levels of development and the molecular genetic mechanisms involved, e.g. are tinkering events more likely to involve shifts in cis-regulatory elements or in pattern/field-specifying genes? other chapters address the extent to which tinkering occurs through changes in modules or through changes in interactions between modules, how such shifts are manifested phenotypically and how epigenetic and epistatic pathways constrain or perhaps promote particular kinds of developmental shifts.  the book also considers the role of tinkering in speciation events and how natural selection could operate on developmental mechanisms. key questions posed include how we test tinkering hypotheses using the fossil record, how the concept of tinkering fits with concepts of homeostasis and how we investigate whether tinkering explains such changes in life history strategy as loss of the larval stage in echinoderms. with contributions from experts in a range of fields, this fascinating book is exciting reading for anyone studying evolution, developmental biology or genetics.
