World War II was a defining event for the United States in the twentieth century. Our country fought wars in both the European theater of operations and the Pacific theater. At home, nearly the entire country was involved in one way or another in the production of materiel for the war. This volume contains ninety reminiscences of that war from people now living in Umatilla County, Oregon, or who lived here during the time of the war. Thus, the reader will find here participant accounts of the Normandy landing, the Battle of the Bulge, crossing the Rhine with Patton, the battle of Iwo Jima (including the raising of the flag there), dropping the first atomic bomb, slogging through Burma with General Merrill's Marauders, "buzz bombs" (V-1 rockets) over London, and fighting on several Pacific islands; and included among those narratives, accounts of ground war, air war, and war at sea. Also: training, the miseries of life on the front (lack of food, lack of sanitary facilities, weather, insects and snakes), PTSD (then known as shell shock), and guilt feelings. In addition, there are thorough discussions of what life on the home front was like: rationing, air-raid warnings, waiting for loved ones, war bonds, travel restrictions, actually being Rosie the Riveter (and other employment opportunities for women), romances and failed marriages, and the various scrap drives to aid the war effort. The Umatilla County Historical Society is now pleased to present this volume of both veterans' and civilians' memories about that war that changed our country so profoundly.
